The formation of calcite scale in and leachate collection and treatment systems is a common problem experienced by landfills. When pipes and pumps begin to scale-up, the system becomes less efficient and, at critical levels, leachate will begin to collect. If left long enough, leachate containment can be lost and leakages may occur. Energy costs can increase as pumps and other equipment become less efficient - an expensive proposition for both the environment and the bottom-line.

 

When leachate scaling is present, a considerable amount of time and money goes towards removing it. For instance, regular pressure-washing (or "jetting") operations are done to mechanically remove the scale build-up. Chemical scale inhibitors are tried as well; however they're expensive and regulatory bodies are beginning to view them less favorably.

 

The Hard Truth: It's dirty, repetitive work and existing scale treatments only scratch the surface and do not address the root cause of the problem. The scaling problem will persist and landfill operators will have to continue dealing with it indefinitely.
